Poor People's Campaign Sukkot 10/16 at 7:00 pm
In 1967, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. launched the Poor People’s Campaign, to educate, organize, and mobilize people around not just racism and civil rights, but also the interfunctionality of racism, poverty, and the war economy. The Poor People’s Campaign was relaunched on the 50th anniversary by Reverend William Barber and Reverend Liz Theoharis, to build a long term movement, challenge false narratives, and support real and systemic change. As part of that, the Campaign is working towards a mass mobilization in Washington, DC on June 20, 2020 – after the primaries and before both parties’ conventions – to call on both parties to focus these issues.
As we move through this month of Elul - Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and into Sukkot - we are reminded of our frailty, and we gird ourselves to do the work of living our best selves in the coming year. It’s a great context and opportunity in which to learn about the Poor People’s Campaign, and be inspired to consider how, in being our best selves, we can help others, too.
The program on October 16th is an opportunity to learn about Sukkot and connect it to the work undertaken by the Poor Peoples’ Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival.
