The Audacity of Prayer: Shabbaton with Rabbi Aviva Richman January 10-11, 2020

In partnership with CBE and Altshul, join Rabbi Aviva Richman for a Shabbat of learning centered around the topic of "The Audacity of Prayer". There will be a dinner following Friday night services and a luncheon on Saturday following services.

Contingent upon adequate interest, childcare will be provided after lunch, during Rabbi Richman's teaching, on Saturday, January 11. Pre-registration and pre-payment ($20/child) are required. If you are interested, please contact childcare@altshul.org before January 7.

Friday night: 
"Piety, Prayer, Protest?:  Early Modern Jewish Women on the Binding of Isaac"
How can we approach challenging themes in prayer and theology in a way that deepens our relationship with God, rather than being a source of alienation? Through the words of early modern Jewish women, we will interrogate the meeting point between critique and devotion.   While much ink has been spilled about the moral challenges of the binding of Isaac, these Yiddish prayers teach us to turn our outrage into prayer, and uplift our voices in pious protest.

Saturday afternoon:
Singing Through Chaos
We will take a deep dive into messy Talmudic stories and Midrash about the role of song and silence in navigating a world of chaos. How can song carry us through the tumult of joy, sadness and confusion that life throws our way?  When is it time to stop singing?  Is song meant to settle us or sometimes meant to shake us up?  Through stories that highlight the role of song in some of the most foundational moments in our canon, we will probe our own relationship to song and silence in our lives and times.
