In these member-led groups, participants come together on a regular basis to find deeper meaning and joy in shared interests, identities, and life stages. Please use the form below to let us know which small group or groups you would like to join, lead, or learn more about.


Small Groups Seeking New Members

French Speakers Small Group

Connect with other members who are from France, Québec, other French-speaking countries, or just fluent in French.

Silent Reading Small Group

Gather with other CBE members to read together and then chat about our latest finds. Everyone brings their own book. There are no assigned selections.

Shabbat Tables

Get connected to occasionally share Shabbat dinners with members who live in your neighborhood or share your life stage, such as younger members, grandparents, or families with young kids. (Group leader Katherine Redlus)

Writers Circle

Connect with others interested in creative writing (whether in the form of essay, short story, memoir of novel) in order to share and critique our own work in a safe and supportive environment.


Board Gamers

Play and socialize with others who love a good game. Our Board Gamers Group is for you if you are in your twenties or older, single or a couple, a casual player or gaming geek.

Yachad Parent Groups

Bagels, coffee, and reflective conversations with other Yachad parents on select Shabbat mornings following family services.

Stretch and Yoga Group
Nicole Colbert, a long time yoga practitioner and dance educator, will guide the group through asanas (yoga postures) and stretching to connect body, mind and spirit.

Navigating Professional and Personal Spaces in the Wake of the Israel-Hamas War
Many Jews who are active in progressive spaces, including some CBE members, have shared feeling shaken, challenged, or isolated by friends, colleagues, and classmates during this difficult time. Others have articulated a feeling of alienation in conservative spaces. Join this safe, supportive and intimate setting to talk about how to navigate the complexity of these relationship.

High Holy Days Sermon Discussion Groups
Dig deeper into the messages, themes, and words of Torah that clergy preach in their sermons this year. Groups will be provided with a three-meeting guide that will include a sermon for each meeting, some of the traditional and contemporary sources that inform them, and questions for further reflection and discussion.

Sacred Art Small Group
Whether you craft–or would like to craft–traditional ritual items (e.g. kiddush cups, seder plates, mezuzot, spice boxes, kippot, challah covers, etc.) or incorporate Jewish themes into your art, come together with other creatives who work in a variety of media,  to share ideas, techniques, and inspiration (along with your work!).

Sage Discussions: Wise Aging

CBE's senior-oriented discussion group focuses this year on the topic of Wise Aging. Using various resources, the group will address how to live one's later years with spirit, resilience and wisdom.

Infertility Support Group
A supportive space, led by a social worker from the Jewish Board of Family and Children’s Services, to connect with other community members struggling with infertility.

Pregnancy Loss

Find support, camaraderie, and a safe space to reflect with other CBE members who have experienced loss through miscarriage, failed fertility treatment, or medical termination.

Challah Baking

Knead, bake, and braid with other community members .

Separated, Divorced, and Single/Solo Parents Small Group

Find support, camaraderie, and fun with other CBE community members who find themselves in this phase of life.

Chevra Kadisha Members

Burial society volunteers share practical knowledge and reflect on the emotions, feelings, and attitudes towards death that fulfilling this mitzvah brings up.

Cook Bake Eat (CBE)

Learn, share, and prepare Jewish dishes together for holidays and from all over the world!

Empty Nesters Group

Connect and reflect together with other CBE members who are in this new life stage.

City Outings

Join member Joy London for Jewish-themed cultural events throughout NYC—art, plays, music, dance, lectures, walking tours, etc. Venture beyond Garfield Place and enjoy our city’s best offerings as a group!

Neighborhood Groups

Enhance your circle of neighborhood friends families by joining together to informally connect and celebrate Jewish holidays together.

Members of Mizrachi and Sephardi Background

Come together with Members of Mizrachi and Sephardi Background to share your histories and cultures with one another; as well as explore ways to further celebrate and integrate these cultures into the life and practices of CBE and the community at large.

CBE Knits

Join CBEKnits for conversation, camaraderie, and skill sharing; as well as "knit for good" projects.

Yiddish Conversation and Culture

Whether you're fluent or just learning, join with others to practice Yiddish and celebrate Yiddish culture.

Gardening

Share your love, knowledge, questions, or interest in gardening with other community gardeners.

Mah Jongg

Whether you’re a seasoned player or want to learn from experienced gamers, Mah Jongg is a great way to connect with friends while having fun.

Queer Parents Group

Enhance your circle of LGBTQ+ families, by joining the Queer Parents group.

Holocaust Descendants

We gather to share our stories and explore how our connections to the Holocaust hold meaning in our lives, using a particular text or theme as a springboard for discussion or action.

Nature Chug

Commune with the trees, and other CBE nature lovers, in a group that regularly explores Prospect Park and other Brooklyn green spaces through walks and contemplative practices.

Musicians' Circle

Play together, get to know one another, and occasionally explore the place of music in Jewish life and practices. Get ready for an acoustic jam!

Season of Teshuvah

Get connected with community members to engage together in the reflection and accounting that helps us prepare for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Groups will meet weekly three times in September, with the support of trained group leaders, accessible and interactive resources, and our small groups specialist, Rabbi Jason Gitlin.
