CBE Meet the Moment

Thank you for your interest in MEETING THE MOMENT with CBE. Our community is strongest when we work together to fight the hate that permeates so much of our world right now.  The Democracy Team, the Refugee Task Force, and the CBE clergy are working closely together to bring you more opportunities to stand up - in whatever way makes sense to you. Below are some newer and upcoming activities that may be a good fit for you. PLEASE SCROLL ALL THE WAY THROUGH AND CHOOSE THE ACTION THAT YOU ARE MOST DRAWN TO!

Please reach out to democracy@cbebk.org or cberefugeetaskforce@cbebk.org for more information, to get more involved, or to be connected to others doing this work! And, of course, check out all the other ways to get involved here.

Weekly Vigil for Democracy at the Manhattan Detention Center | Tuesdays | 6pm | Third Ave & 29th Street in Sunset Park (116 29th Street)

113 ICE detainees are currently being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC), and so our fellow organizers at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Bay Ridge are holding a weekly vigil outside the prison to call for their release and to stand against the inhumane treatment of our neighbors. Participants first stand together for visibility on 3rd Avenue, with signs of support for immigrants; then we stand outside MDC, where ICE detainees can see that we are there to support them. Supporters are invited to bring signs. Together we will build and strengthen vital community connections and let our immigrant neighbors know that they are not alone. To be informed of scheduling changes, sign up here. All are welcome and we are looking for CBE members interested in committing to attend the vigil on an ongoing (does not need to be weekly) basis.

Non-Violence Civil Disobedience Training with Alexis Danzig | December 7 | 11am - 4pm | Lunch included | Ballroom

CBE is 100% committed to non-violence—in our protest, our words, and our actions. This training introduces participants to the philosophy and techniques of nonviolence and direct action. We know from American history that civil disobedience is a principled, time-honored, public, and effective method of bringing nonviolent pressure to bear on unjust systems. This training will be a deep dive into these ideas and practices, and can accommodate 50 participants.

Shine the Light! | Thursdays | 5:30pm | Grand Army Plaza

This is a perfect action for families and those looking for a regular and joyful way to make a difference—and it’s a GREAT opportunity to use the signs you just made for the No Kings march! All it takes is stepping outside in Grand Army Plaza for half an hour each week with a sign. We can meet our neighbors, build a visible movement, and join together in acts of peaceful solidarity. Passing cars love to honk for democracy! This gathering is national—let’s be part of this growing presence of people power! All are welcome!
